May 28, 2003 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Edmonton Trappers News Release

Catcher John Buck was 2-for-4 with a run scored, a double and an RBI as the New Orleans Zephyrs downed the Edmonton Trappers 8-4 Tuesday night at TELUS Field. For the Trappers it was their sixth loss in a row, a new season-high for the club. Edmonton was swept by the Colorado Springs Sky Sox in the final four games of the road trip, which ended on Monday night. The Sky Sox currently lead the Central Division of the Pacific Coast League, while the Zephyrs entered the night with a ½ game lead over Oklahoma in the East Division. Edmonton has struggled against the top teams in the league, having posted a 10-19 record thus far against teams with a winning record. The Trappers and Zephyrs resume this four-game series on Wednesday night at TELUS Field. Wednesday night is "Baseball Night in Canada." Edmonton Oilers forward Georges Laraque will be on hand to throw out the first pitch and will be available to sign autographs.

New Orleans jumped all over Edmonton starter Tim Drew (0-6) with three runs in the first inning. Eric Bruntlett drew a walk to open the inning and advanced to second on a single by Dave Matranga. Henri Stanley then singled to center field, plating Bruntlett and advancing Matranga to second. John Buck loaded the bases with a long single to left field and Royce Huffman followed with a single to center that plated Matranga. Raul Chavez then singled to left, plating Stanley with the third run of the frame. They plated a single run in the second inning as Bruntlett led off with a single, advanced to second on an error by center fielder Peter Bergeron and eventually came in to score on a sacrifice fly by Huffman. The Trappers battled back with a single run in the bottom of the fourth inning as Valentino Pascucci singled with one out, moved to third on a double by Edwards Guzman and scored on a sacrifice fly by Matt Cepicky.

Drew shut the Trappers out for three consecutive innings after the second, but then surrendered three runs in the sixth frame. Matranga singled with one out and moved to second on a base hit by Stanley. Buck then doubled to left, scoring Matranga and advancing Stanley to third. Bo Donaldson then replaced Drew and with two out in the inning yielded a two-run single to Colin Porter. Terrmel Sledge led off the bottom of the inning with a single that extended his hitting streak to 11 games and Pascucci followed with his sixth home run of the season, a towering blast just to the right of the batters eye in center field. The Trappers had runners on first and third with one out in the frame, but left-hander Mike Gallo came on to replace starter Jared Fernandez (5-4) and got Luis Figueroa to ground into a inning-ending double play. Edmonton plated their fourth and final run of the game in the seventh inning. Bergeron drew a walk to start the inning, moved to third on a single by Scott Hodges and scored as Sledge bounced into a fielder's choice. Alan Zinter capped the scoring with a solo home run off Julio Manon in the top of the ninth inning.
