Tucson Sidewinders News Release
Tucson, AZ â The Tucson Sidewinders will host the American Red Cross' finale of the "Tucson Challenge" before the game on Thursday, May 29th at Tucson Electric Park, where the Sidewinders will take on the Portland Beavers. The Tucson Challenge is a five-day citywide effort designed to generate 1,000 blood donations or pledges by May 29th. The Challenge began on Sunday, May 25th at Reid Park.
The Challenge finale will begin at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. All participants who have donated or pledged to give blood during the Challenge week will receive a special Red Cross t-shirt and are invited to take part in the formation of a human red cross on the grounds just outside Gate A for an aerial photo shoot. The Save a Life Tour convoy museum and three local bloodmobiles will be open for tours and blood donations. The Arizona Daily Star and Tucson Fire Department will be coordinating photo of local donors. The Challenge marks the beginning of a six-month campaign during which Pima County hopes to raise over 27,000 blood donations.
The nationwide Save A Life Tour began in Los Angeles, CA on May 20th and includes two specially designed convoys that will visit 350 communities in 35 Red Cross regions coast-to-coast. The goal is to raise 3 million blood donations nationwide by November. The tour is designed to boost public education of the nation's low blood supply and encourage eligible individuals to donate blood regularly.
In addition to the American Red Cross pre-game ceremonies, a military F-16 flyover from the 308 Fighter Squadron of the 56th Fighter Wing from Luke AFB is scheduled to take place. The game itself features the Sidewinders regular Thursday promotion, "Thirsty Thursday Live," with $1 beer and soft drinks for 2 hours after the first pitch.
