Spokane Zephyr FC News Release
Spokane, WA - Spokane Zephyr FC is excited to announce it will host a goalkeeping clinic with two-time Olympic Gold Medalist and World Cup Winner Briana Scurry on April 19 at ONE Spokane Stadium.
This is set to be a hands-on, highly educational clinic for young girls and women seeking to gain feedback from some of the top coaches and goalkeepers in the area. The clinic will be organized as a dual format clinic geared towards both youth (12-18 years old) and adult women. Clinic stations will be led by Scurry, Zephyr FC Goalkeeper Coach, Cris Lewis, and 2024/2025 Goalkeeper of the Year, Hope Hisey.
Hisey spoke on the impact the clinic will have on the Spokane community.
"It means a lot for the Spokane community to learn from one of the biggest legends in the game," said Hisey. "Goalkeepers who get the opportunity to learn from her expertise and wisdom are in for an invaluable experience."
Scurry comes to Spokane as one of the world's most talented goalkeepers, boasting a career resume that includes Olympic gold medals with the U.S. Women's National Team in 1996 and 2004, and a FIFA World Cup Championship in 1999. Her 133-12-14 international record helped earn Scurry an induction into the National Soccer Hall of Fame in 2017.
Coach Lewis reflected on the inspiration and power Scurry has brought to women's sports.
"Having Briana Scurry's presence and expertise in Spokane means a lot to me both personally and professionally. She was someone I grew up watching, and that '99 team created such a defining moment not just for women's soccer, but for women's sports as a whole," said Lewis.
Scurry's contributions to soccer extend off the pitch as well. After suffering a career-ending concussion in 2010, Briana devoted her time to increasing awareness on traumatic brain injuries in sports, testifying to U.S. Congress twice and appearing in a short documentary on The Washington Post on her recovery from a surgery to cure her concussion-caused headaches.
Scurry also played a pivotal role in advocating for diversity and inclusion in sports, becoming one of the first African American and openly gay athletes to play professionally. Her impact on African American women in sports is memorialized in the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of African American History and Culture, where a permanent exhibit of Scurry exists.
Coach Lewis is excited about what this clinic will bring to Spokane.
"It's incredibly exciting for the city of Spokane. Opportunities like this don't come around often, where players get direct access to someone who has performed at the highest level of the game," said Lewis. "It's not just about the training, it's about exposure, inspiration, and showing young players what's possible.
"Being able to combine that with our coaching staff and players makes it even more impactful, and we're really proud to bring something like this to the community."
Post-clinic, Zephyr FC will host Sporting Club Jacksonville at 4:00pm PT, and goalkeeping clinic attendees will be able to buy a match ticket for just $1. All match attendees will have the exciting opportunity for a meet and greet with Briana Scurry on the main concourse from 3:00-3:45pm.
