Real Maryland Monarchs News Release
Silver Spring, MD - Last season, Real Maryland FC made the announcement that it had formed a partnership with Real Sporting de Gijon who plays in La Liga, Primera Division of Spain. The Spanish Club was established June 1, 1905 in Gijon, Asturias. Known as the Rojiblancos because of their red and white striped jerseys, their home field is El Molinon Stadium.
The partnership focuses on multiple aspects of player and club development. One of the highlights, for Real Maryland FC, was that there would be spots reserved for their youth players in the Real Sporting Gijon Summer Academy Camp. At the Monarch's discretion, the club would be able to send over youth players from its Super Y League Programs. The Spots at the academy included, tuition, room and board.
Last season Real Maryland FC identified three players to take advantage of this opportunity. Because the arrangement went well, Real Sporting Gijon has extended the invitation again to the Monarchs upping the amount of available spots to eight. Currently, Real Maryland FC has filled five of those spots with players from their Super Y League teams ranging in age groups from U14-U17.
During the Spring Pre-Season, Real Maryland FC held its first Mid-Atlantic Soccer Festival at Richard Montgomery High School in Rockville, Maryland. Real Sporting Gijon sent over one of their scouts to observe and analyze the local talent. The level of play ranged from U14 Select Premier teams, including RMFC SYL Teams, to local Colleges and Universities as well as some United Soccer League Division II Professional Teams.
One player was selected to the Real Gijon Sporting Academy Camp free of any expenses from the Real Maryland Mid-Atlantic Soccer Festival.
Another player, who was selected to go over to Spain last year, is still keeping ties with Real Sporting Gijon as they watch and analyze his development over the next couple of seasons.
In addition to the youth players going over to the Spanish La Liga Club, the Head Coach and Captain for Real Maryland FC's Professional side got to go over to observe and participate with the Club after the USL Season had concluded in 2009.
This year's candidates will be announced in the near future as the trip to Spain is rapidly approaching in early August.
Real Maryland FC's U8-U12 Future Monarch Travel Team Programs are beginning to take effect on the club and hope to influence in the near future more players moving onto the Super Y League Teams and travelling abroad to Europe. The Monarchs are looking to have between 8-15 teams this fall competing in the Maryland Area.
