Charleston, SC. The Barclay's English Premier League Bolton Wanderers defeated the Charleston Battery 2-0 Saturday night at Blackbaud Stadium in an international exhibition match. Bolton captain Kevin Davies scored a goal and added an assist as Bolton won their second game of the North American tour.
Bolton are in the middle of a three match pre-season tour, they defeated the Charlotte Eagles 3-0 last Wednesday night. The Wanderers conclude their trip this Wednesday night with a match versus Major League Soccer's Toronto FC.
5,249 turned out to watch the first ever visit to Blackbaud Stadium by an EPL team and they were rewarded with a well taken goal by Bolton captain Kevin Davies in the 30th minute. After some neat passing midfielder Martin Petrov whipped the ball into the middle and forward Kevin Davies finished neatly at the back post.
The Battery had a chance at the stroke of half time after winger Jon Gruenewald cut inside his defender on the right side of the box. Gruenewald created enough room for a shot but his effort flew high.
Bolton added a second in the 52nd minute after Kevin Davies played an excellent first-time pass in from the right side. Midfielder Tamir Cohen ran on to the through ball and calmly chipped over Battery goalkeeper Keith Wiggans into the goal.
Wiggans was called into action again in the 73rd minute after the ball was set back for midfielder Mustapha Riga. Riga hammered a volley at the goal but Wiggans reacted well and made a diving save.
The Battery's best chance of the game came in stoppage time after forward Levi Coleman slipped a ball through to midfielder Rudolph Mayard behind Bolton's back-four. Mayard ran onto the pass but his left-footed effort curled wide.
The Battery returns to league action next Saturday July 24 with a road match versus the Harrisburg City Islanders (7 PM, 950 Am / charlestonbattery.com).
