York United FC News Release
Toronto, ON - York9 FC are excited to confirm the signing of Argentine attacking midfielder Mateo Hernández from Superliga side Club Atlético Colón.
The 22-year-old, who can operate centrally or on either flank, has put pen to paper on a deal through 2021, with further options for 2022 and 2023.
Hernández, a native of Santa Fe, made seven first-team appearances for Colon last year, facing some of Argentina's biggest clubs in the process, including Banfield and Argentinos Juniors. He also tasted action in the Copa Sudamericana as Colon got the better of Peruvian side Deportivo Municipal. With Hernández in the squad, the club followed that up with a two-legged victory over the iconic River Plate before a penalty shootout loss in the last sixteen.
A player bursting with creativity, Hernández has been on Managing Consultant Angus McNab's radar for quite a while and neatly complements York9 FC's other off-season recruit, German striker Julian Ulbricht.
"Since early June, I've been in discussions with Mateo's representative about bringing him to our club", McNab says.
"He is a player who can play on both wings and also as a creative attacking midfielder. One of the most impressive things is his ability to see a line-breaking pass and release others and that's something we certainly needed to add to the group."
"He's played in front of ferocious crowds in Argentina and I really think he will become a fan favourite in 2021."
Hernández becomes the club's second Argentine player, following in the footsteps of captain Manny Aparicio.
