The final playoff position in the 2023 rendition of the Canadian Premier League will be decided on the last match day of the season as Atlético Ottawa suffered a narrow defeat away to Ontario rivals York United.

KEY MOMENTS

Atlético Ottawa has dropped to 6th place in the Canadian Premier League following a 1-0 defeat at York United.

Ottawa had the better of chances on the day but was unable to find the back of the net.

Second-half substitute Kevin dos Santos came off the bench to secure the three points at the death for the home team (88').

To qualify for the 2023 playoffs, Atlético needs to beat Forge FC next weekend on the final match of the regular season, whilst York United needs to not win away to Vancouver FC.

For teams equal on points at the end of the season, the first tie-breaker is "number of games won" followed by "goal difference".

Spanish defender Diego Espejo returned to the starting line-up after more than two months sidelined with injury and showcased how much his presence was missed with a stand-out defensive display.

The 21-year-old Atlético de Madrid loanee led the team in clearances (6) and aerial duels won (3).

Atlético pushed for a winning goal and looked the more threatening side for a large portion of the match.

York goalkeeper Niko Giantstopulos was forced into making seven saves.

Zach Verhoven, Ilias Illiadis and Rubén del Campo all saw efforts parried by the York shot-stopper.

Atlético keeper Nathan Ingham also made seven saves, including a brilliant one-on-one against Austin Ricci when the match was still level.

Over 100 Atlético fans made the trip to York United to support the club, in yet another massive display of the growing supporters' culture in Canada.
