Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz News Release
OKLAHOMA CITY - For the third time this season, the Yard Dawgz traveled to Texas and defeated the home team. Yard Dawgz quarterback Stan Hill completed a 22-yard pass to Al Hunt as time expired to defeat the Lubbock Renegades 64-61 in front of a crowd of 3,638 Saturday night at City Bank Coliseum. The winning tally capped a 14-point comeback in the final 1:32 to improve the Yard Dawgz record to 4-3 and drop the Renegades record to 2-5.
The home team was the first to get on the board when QB Robert Kent completed his first of seven TD passes of the night. The Dawgz weren't scoreless long due to QB Stan Hill's touchdown pass to WR Danny Howard, who later received the Schutt Offensive Player of the Game award.
It was a see-saw battle for most of the night with 16 lead changes for the evening and only three of the combined 22 drives resulted without any points. Lubbock's Robert Kent converted on 20-of-31 pass attempts for 270 yards. Oklahoma City's Stan Hill was 22-of-40 in pass attempts for 342 yards and seven touchdowns. Yard Dawgz Al Hunt led his team with eight receptions for 114 yards and two trips to the end zone. The teams battled it out as they alternated scores throughout the first half.
Kicker Keith Toogood should have felt right at home in Lubbock. The former Texas Tech Red Raider played for the Renegades until being released by the team earlier this season. Toogood's 33 yard field goal propelled the Dawgz to a two point lead going into halftime, 37-35.
Despite receiving the ball to open the second half, the Dawgz couldn't score on the first drive of the third quarter. The Renegades took advantage and scored with a 31 Robert Kent pass to Marcus Walker.
Yard Dawgz veteran, Al Hunt, responded with a 57 yard kick return to score for the Dawgz. During the contest, Hunt added 2 receiving touchdowns and 114 yards, extending his total career points to 730.
The second half continued the back-and-forth battle as both offenses had no trouble scoring. Lubbock led after the 3rd quarter, 48-44.
The fourth quarter was more of the same as both offenses scored easily. The odds were against the Dawgz late in the fourth, as they were down by 10 points with 2 minutes left. On 4th and 15, the Yard Dawgz converted the biggest fourth down of the season when Hill and rookie Ryan Clift connected for a 24 yard touchdown, bringing the Dawgz within 3 points.
The Dawgz could smell victory when Toogood's only onside kick of the contest was recovered by Danny Howard. In dramatic fashion, the Dawgz struggled to move the ball until QB Stan Hill connected with Hunt as the time expired on the game clock, giving the Yard Dawgz a 64-61 win over the Renegades.
The Dawgz have two weeks to prepare for their next home game when they host the Laredo Lobos on June 2nd. Kickoff is set for 7:05 p.m. on Compassionate Care Hospice Field at the Ford Center.
