The Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz (4-2) take on the defending ArenaCup Champion Tennessee Valley Vipers (5-2) this Saturday, May 16th, at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville, AL. Kickoff is set for 7:30pm CST. Saturday's contest marks only the second time the teams have played one another. Tennessee Valley defeated the Yard Dawgz last season, 77-37, in the only other game ever played between the two teams. The Vipers went on to win the 2008 ArenaCup, defeating the Spokane Shock, 56-55, in overtime.
The Yard Dawgz are coming off their second straight loss, this one to Central Division rival Tulsa Talons, 75-56. The Dawgz began the season 4-0, the best start in franchise history, before dropping two straight. Injuries and miscues hampered Oklahoma City throughout the game. One bright spot for the Dawgz was newly acquired WR Craig Fulton Jr. who made an instant impact in his first snap as a Yard Dawg, grabbing a 32 yard TD catch in the first quarter. Fulton finished the game with 119 yards on 4 catches with 3 TDs.
"This game against Tennessee Valley will be a big gauge on where we have taken this organization in a short amount of time," commented Head Coach Sparky McEwen.
Saturday's matchup pits the af2's 3rd ranked scoring offense against the 3rd ranked scoring defense. Oklahoma City averages almost 65 points per game behind QB Robert Kent, who leads the league in pass efficiency rating (145.4) and completion percentage (77.3). Kent's top target is af2 veteran WR Al Hunt, who inches closer to the leagues all-time scoring and TD records every week. Hunt currently sits tied with Central Valley's George Williams as the all-time leading scorer with 1,168 points and is one TD behind Williams (192) for the lead.
