Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz News Release
OKLAHOMA CITY - The Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz (4-3) took on the Tennessee Valley Vipers (6-2) at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville, AL Saturday night, but the defending af2 ArenaCup Champions were too much for the Dawgz. Despite a tight first half between the two squads, the Vipers were able to pull away in the second half to seal the victory, 49-24.
The Yard Dawgz defense played it best game in three weeks, allowing the Vipers to score only 35 offensive points. However, QB Robert Kent struggled against the leagues third ranked scoring defense (39.9 ppg) and sixth ranked total defense (254.6 ypg), completing 17 of 35 passes for 191 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions. Kent was also sacked three times, including the last play of the first half when the Dawgz threatened to score from the Vipers' 4-yard line.
Tennessee Valley held a 21-12 lead at the half before Bradly Chavez stole the show in the second half, scoring four straight touchdowns on two catches, one interception, and one fumble return. Chavez's scoring explosion put the game out of reach as the Vipers took a 49-12 lead in beginning of the 4th quarter.
Oklahoma City WR Al Hunt continued to show the league once again why he is one of the best receivers to ever play the game when he caught a 37 yard TD pass from Kent in the 2nd quarter. The TD grab placed Hunt as arenafootball2's all-time leading scorer (non-kicking) with 1,174 points and tied him for 1st all-time in af2 in career TDs (193) with Central Valley's George Williams. Hunt is also 2nd all-time in af2 in career receiving yards (7,383) and career receiving TDs (166), and is 3rd all-time in the league in career receptions (527). Interestingly enough, Hunt was not voted to the leagues All-Time Top Ten WR list in a preseason poll by media members from around the country.
The Yard Dawgz will have a few extra days this week to prepare for the Corpus Christi Sharks. The two teams face off on Monday, May 25th, at 3:05 PM at the American Bank Center in Corpus Christi, TX.
The Yard Dawgz square off against Central Division rival Tulsa Talons on Saturday, May 30th at the Cox Convention Center. Yard Dawgz Flex Packs are now on sale starting at just $50! The Yard Dawgz Block Party begins every home game at 5:00 PM on Reno. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:05 PM. For additional information, please call (405) 228-3294 or visit www.okcyarddawgz.com.
