Clearwater Threshers News Release
TAMPA - The Clearwater Threshers dropped a 4-3 13-inning heartbreaker to the Tampa Yankees Friday in front of an announced crowd of 5,202 at Steinbrenner Field.
The 13th inning proved unfortunate for the Threshers (21-19), who fell to 1-4 in extra innings in 2013. Tampa (16-23) improved to 2-5 against the Threshers, who fell to three games back of the Dunedin Blue Jays in the Florida State League's North Division.
Tampa cracked the scoreboard first in the bottom of the first inning against Threshers starter Nick Hernandez. Angelo Gumbs led off with a single into shallow right field, and moved to second on a ground out to first by Ben Gamel. Robert Refsnyder banged a double to center that plated Gumbs and made it 1-0 Tampa.
Clearwater evened the score in the top of the sixth inning against Tampa starter Scottie Allen. With one out, second baseman Carlos Alonso sliced a double up the left field line, and left fielder Aaron Altherr then hammered a two-bagger off the left field wall to plate Alonso and knot things up at 1-1.
The Yankees regained the lead in the bottom of the seventh. Carmen Angelini lashed a single up the middle and stole second against Threshers reliever Colby Shreve. Anderson Feliz then laced his own single through the middle, scoring Angelini and putting the Yankees ahead 2-1.
The Threshers tied the ballgame in the top of the eighth against Yankees lefty Cesar Cabral, who walked Alonso to lead off the inning. Altherr singled to left, and right fielder Kelly Dugan drew a walk of his own to load the bases. Yankees manager Luis Sojo pulled Cabral for righty Taylor Garrison, who got third baseman Maikel Franco to bounce into a double play for the first two outs. However, Alonso scored on the play, evening it up at 2-2.
Clearwater pulled ahead for the first time in the top of the tenth against Garrison. Center fielder Kyrell Hudson led off the inning with a double up the left field line, and moved to third on a wild pitch. With one out, Altherr lifted a fastball to center that was caught for the second out, but allowed Hudson to race home on the sacrifice fly and make it 3-2 in favor of the Threshers.
Tampa managed to tie it back up in the bottom of the tenth against righty Ryan O'Sullivan. With one out, Ben Gamel singled to right and moved to second on a walk drawn by Refsnyder. Gary Sanchez grounded to second, but shortstop Jonathan Roof's throw to first for the double play was wide, and Sanchez reached to put runners on the corners with two outs. Angelini laced a single through the middle to plate Gamel, tying the ballgame at 3-3. O'Sullivan fanned Feliz to end the inning with the score still tied.
The Yankees finally broke through again in the bottom of the thirteenth against Threshers reliever Luis Paulino (1-4). Feliz led off with a single to right, and Dan Fiorito immediately pummeled a double off the left field wall to plate Feliz and touch off the celebration for Tampa.
Hernandez took a no-decision despite six superb innings, allowing a single run on three hits and a walk while fanning eight. Shreve allowed a run on four hits over 1.2 innings pitched. O'Sullivan coughed up a run on three hits and two talks over 2.1 innings, whiffing one. Paulino took the loss with one run allowed in two-plus innings of work; he gave up three hits.
Allen took his own no-decision for the Yankees, with a run allowed on five hits over six innings. He struck out seven and didn't issue a walk. Cabral gave up a run on two hits and four walks over an inning-plus. Garrison surrendered a run on one hit over three innings, striking out two. Rigoberto Arrebato (1-1) got the win, with three shutout innings and two strikeouts recorded.
The Threshers will look for a win Saturday night at Steinbrenner Field, with lefty Hoby Milner getting the ball for Clearwater against Tampa Yankee Bryan Mitchell. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m., and you can catch the action starting at 5:45 p.m. on ThreshersBaseball.com.
