Tampa Yankees News Release
TAMPA - In his final start of the season, LHP Dietrich Enns earned his first win as the Tampa Yankees (32-35, 66-71) held on to a late lead in a 3-2 victory over the Lakeland Flying Tigers (21-43, 54-79-1) on Saturday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field.
Enns (1-1) held the Flying Tigers scoreless through six innings, scattering four hits and a walk while striking out three. The southpaw finished his season with a sparkling 0.76 earned run average.
Lakeland starter Kevin Ziomek retired the first 11 batters he faced before Tampa scratched across the first run of the game in the fourth.
Mike Ford crushed a two-out double to the wall in right-center to break up the perfect game. With Miguel Andujar at the plate, Ford surprised everyone by stealing third base. A wild pitch by Ziomek allowed Ford to score, giving the Yankees a 1-0 lead.
Ziomek (9-11) allowed one run on two hits in six innings for the Flying Tigers, tallying three strikeouts while not allowing a walk.
Tampa tacked on a pair of important insurance runs in the eighth against RHP Logan Longwith. A single by Joey Falcone and a ground-rule double by Yancarlos Baez placed runners at second and third with one out. Abiatal Avelino singled to center, scoring both to give the Yankees a 3-0 advantage.
RHP Christian Morris made his Tampa Yankee debut in relief of Enns in the seventh and worked two scoreless frames before finding trouble in the ninth. Raph Rhymes hit a leadoff single before being replaced at first by Javier Betancourt on a fielder's choice. A two-run home run to left by Francisco Martinez cut the lead to 3-2.
LHP Icezack Flemming entered and surrendered a double to Curt Powell. After striking out Ben Verlander, Flemming walked Jared Reaves. With the go-ahead runs on base, Grayson Greiner ended the game with a fly out to left. Flemming earned his first save with the Tampa Yankees.
Ford (2-for-3, 2B, SB, R) picked up his first stolen base of the year and his third in his career. Avelino (1-for-4, 2 RBI) hit what proved to be the game-winning single in the eighth. Chris Gittens (1B) and Joey Falcone (1B, R) each went 1-for-3 and Yancarlos Baez (1-for-3, 2B, R) tallied his first hit with the Tampa Yankees.
The season concludes with one final contest between the Yankees and Flying Tigers on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. RHP Jonathan Holder (7-5, 2.44 ERA) is scheduled to face RHP Endrys Briceno (1-3, 4.50 ERA).
