Clearwater Threshers News Release
CLEARWATER, Fla. - Rhys Hoskins and Aaron Brown combined for five hits and four RBIs to pace the Clearwater offense in a 6-1 victory over the Dunedin Blue Jays on Fan Appreciation Night at Bright House Field.
David Whitehead delivered five innings of one-run ball in the start, as Clearwater went up two games to one in the final series of the regular season.
After Dunedin (29-37) grabbed a run in the first inning, the Threshers quickly mounted a response in the bottom half.
Jesmuel Valentin kicked it off with a leadoff walk, and Carlos Tocci followed with a base knock to left off starter Denis Diaz (0-1). Andrew Pullin lined a single to right that was mishandled by right fielder Derrick Loveless for an error, allowing Valentin to score the tying run.
Hoskins followed by pulling a single through the left side, bringing in Tocci to give the Threshers the lead. Brown's RBI grounder to first made it 3-1.
Whitehead (9-11) settled in to hold the Blue Jays off the board through the next four innings. He allowed just one run on six hits and a walk, striking out three across his five innings in the win.
Clearwater (41-25) tacked on with a run in the third, and two more in the fourth.
With two on and one out, Mitch Walding dropped a single to center to score Hoskins and make it 4-1 in the third. An inning later, it was Brown coming through with a two-run single to center to plate both Tocci and Pullin and increase the advantage to 6-1.
Hoskins finished 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, while Brown went 2-for-4 with three runs batted in.
Cody Forsythe spun two perfect innings in relief of Whitehead, racking up three strikeouts. Alexis Rivero followed suit, allowing just one hit and striking out two through two scoreless innings.
