Staten Island Yankees News Release
Staten Island, NY - Five errors led to four unearned runs, as the Staten Island Yankees fell to the Williamsport Crosscutters, 5-3, in 10-innings.
As if the errors were not enough for the pitching staff, the go ahead run was scored on a balk charged to Paul Thorp.
With one out in the top of the tenth, Williamsport's Mike Arbinger reached on an error to shortstop and advanced to third on a single by Brett Holmes, eventually scoring on the balk. After a groundout to the first baseman, Holmes came around to score on a single by Milver Reyes.
Staten Island played catch-up all evening. Williamsport notched one run in the top of the first before the Yankees tied it in their half of the frame on a home run by Hector Zamora.
Williamsport added one more run, their first of four unearned, in the top of the fifth. Edwar Gonzalez knotted the score at two with his first homerun of the season in the bottom of the sixth.
The Crosscutters pulled ahead in the next inning on another unearned run. But in the bottom of the eighth, the Yankees scored one when Enrique Cruz doubled to right field and scored on a single by Bryce Kartler.
Staten Island falls to 18-31 on the season, while Williamsport improves to 32-17. The Yankees will travel to Augusta, NJ to take on the Cardinals tomorrow. They will return to Staten Island for a day game against New Jersey on Friday at 12:15 p.m.
