Tampa Yankees News Release
TAMPA - A five-run fifth by the Brevard County Manatees (6-8, 35-48-1) proved to be too much to overcome as the Tampa Yankees dropped the series finale, 5-3, on Thursday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field. Tampa finished 4-2 during the homestand.
The Yankees jumped out to a 1-0 lead against RHP Cy Sneed in the first. Tyler Wade knocked a single into right advanced on a wild pitch. Abiatal Avelino launched a double into right-center, giving Tampa the lead.
RHP Cale Coshow retired 11 batters in a row and, despite yielding a single in the first, faced the minimum through the fourth. A 29-minute rain delay occurred in the middle of the fourth and Coshow found trouble in the fifth.
On an 0-2 pitch, Coshow hit Garrett Cooper to begin the frame. A double-play groundout by Cameron Garfield helped Coshow continue facing the minimum. However, the right-hander hit Michael Ratterree with a 1-2 offering and Brevard County sparked a rally. Rafael Neda, Angel Ortega and Omar Garcia each singled, tying the game and loading the bases. Chris McFarland then lined a grand slam home run over the 314 sign in right field, giving the Manatees a 5-1 lead.
Coshow (4-2) surrendered five runs on five hits in five innings, striking out two while not issuing a walk.
The T-Yanks chipped away with a run in the seventh Miguel Andujar reached on an error at third by Steven Halcomb and advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Jake Skole. Ericson Leonora followed with an RBI single to center.
Sneed (1-1) held the Yankees to two runs (one earned) on eight hits in seven innings, striking out three while not allowing a walk.
Tampa brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth. Andujar blooped a one-out single into right off RHP Kaleb Earls and scored as Skole lined a double into the right field corner. Leonora then hit a broken-bat grounder to third. Halcomb tagged out Skole and threw on to first, completing a game-ending double play. Earls earned his third save.
Wade (3-for-3, R) has three consecutive multi-hit games. Andujar (2-for-4, 2 R) hit his team-leading fourth triple of the season. Leonora (2-for-4, RBI) added his team-high 42nd RBI. Avelino (2-for-4, 2B, RBI) is 5-for-9 in the last two games.
Up next, the T-Yanks travel to Palm Beach and begin a four-game series with the Cardinals on Friday night at Roger Dean Stadium. RHP Gabriel Encinas (1-2, 3.04 ERA) is scheduled to start for Tampa. The Palm Beach starter is TBA. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. and can be heard LIVE on tybaseball.com
