St. Lucie Mets News Release
PORT ST. LUCIE Fla. (July 9, 2015) - Stefan Sabol provided a go-ahead two-run double in the seventh as the St. Lucie Mets roared back to defeat the Charlotte Stone Crabs 7-2 on Thursday at Tradition Field.
The Mets trailed 2-1 at the stretch but rallied to score three in the seventh and three more in the eighth. Kyle Regnault closed out a shaky ninth by striking out Willy Adames on a 3-2 pitch with the bases loaded.
The Mets took two of three in the series and are now one game under .500 overall (42-43) and one game under .500 in the second half (7-8).
With the offense lacking early, Mets starting pitcher Kevin McGowan kept his team in the game. He allowed two runs, one earned, on four hits in 6.2 innings. He managed to keep the Crabs at bay despite walking five batters.
Kelly Secrest took over and got the final out in the top of the seventh. In the bottom of the inning, Sabol tomahawked a two-run double off of Kyle McKenzie to left field that put the Mets up 3-2. Phil Evans followed with an RBI double.
The Mets loaded the bases with no outs in the eighth and Jairo Perez drove in a run with a single. Victor Cruzado then bashed a two-run double to right to make it 7-2 Mets.
Stone Crabs starter Taylor Guerrieri did not give up a run or a hit in four innings while striking out six. Recovering from Tommy John Surgery in 2013, Guerrieri was lifted for Josh Kimborowicz in the fifth. Kimborowicz struck out the first two batters he faced but then walked Sabol and gave up an RBI double to Evans. From that point on it was all Mets.
Seven of the nine hitters in the Mets lineup ended up with a hit. Evans led the way with two RBI doubles.
Secrest earned the win and improved to 6-2.
The Mets (42-43, 7-8) travel to Lakeland to start a four-game series with the Flying Tigers on Friday. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. and the game can be heard on www.stluciemets.com or on WPSL 1590 AM on the Treasure Coast.
