Yakima Hangs a Half-Dozen in 7th to Handle Ems

YAKIMA, Wash. - Just one night after allowing six runs in an inning, the Yakima Bears (6-3, 24-23) struck for six runs in the seventh to blow out the Eugene Emeralds (5-4, 20-27) 10-2 in front of 1,869 fans at County Stadium Thursday night.

The Bears sent 10 men to the plate, collecting five hits and two walks in the decisive six-run seventh inning.

Yazy Arbelo lined a three-run homer to right in the first inning, his league-leading ninth long ball of the season.

Zach Walters remained red-hot at plate, going 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI and is now 10-for-13 the last three games.

Miguel Pena (2-4) pitched 5 2/3 strong innings, allowing just one earned run on five hits while striking out five and walking two to earn the victory. Adys Portillo (1-5) lasted 4 1/3 innings, giving up four runs on seven hits while striking out three and walking four to absorb the loss.

Keith Cantwell came in to relieve Pena with the bases loaded and two outs in the sixth inning and struck out Tyler Stubblefield to maintain the Bears' two-run advantage.

Arbelo, Roberto Ortiz and Michael Weber all recorded two-hit games as the Bears racked up 12 hits in total.

The club committed three errors and has now made 11 in the first four games of the series.

Yakima and Eugene will be back at it Friday night at 7:05 for the rubber match of the five-game set. Enrique Burgos (0-0, 5.90 ERA) is slated to pitch for the Bears against Mark Hardy (1-0, 3.00 ERA) for the Emeralds.
