Xplosion wins first pro summer league tournament

Pittsburgh, PA. Gateway High School, in Monroesville PA, hosted the ABA's Big City Professional Summer League on Aug 6 & 7. This two day event saw visiting ABA teams from Cleveland, Columbus and Toledo. The teams participated in high level competition with the hometown team, Pittsburgh Xplosion, coming away victorious. All four teams were in action on Saturday. Pittsburgh and Toledo set up the Championship Showdown.

Sunday started with a consolation game between Lake Erie and Columbus, where LE won 124-94. They were led in scoring by Wes Flewellen with 35 points and Jesse Williams added 29 points. Dion Dobbs had 26 and Kevin Forney chipped in 21 in the losing effort by Columbus. The Championship game had the atmosphere of the league finals, and saw the beginning of an inner division rivalry between Toledo and Pittsburgh. The Xplosion won the game 102-89, led by Lawrence Colvert with 21 points and Akeem Clark with 20 and 8 assists. Toledo Ice's top scorer was Aaron Bates with a game high 22. Ryan Swank, the Xplosion's Director of Marketing and Media Relations stated, "The weekend was a great success and the excitement of the fans was wonderful. I can't wait for the regular season if this weekend was any indication of the team's fan support."
