Pittsburgh Xplosion News Release

PITTSBURGH, Sept. 30, 2005 - An explosive brand of professional basketball is ready to rock Pittsburgh. Hoop fans will get their first chance to meet the Pittsburgh Xplosion, the city's new American Basketball Association team, at a tip-off reception for the public and corporate sponsors on Wednesday Oct. 5. The free reception at the Sheraton Hotel at Station Square starts at 6:30 p.m. and the Xplosion will accept voluntary monetary donations at the door for victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Pittsburgh Xplosion General Manager Freddie Lewis, a former All-Star and MVP in the original ABA, Head Coach Tom Thacker and the team, including former NBA players Armon Gilliam and Myron Brown, will meet fans and sign autographs. Entertainment will include a performance by the Xplosion Bomb Squad dance team.

"Our goal in the Xplosion's first season as an ABA franchise is to field an explosive hard-working team that will ignite fan interest in the rebirth of professional basketball in Pittsburgh," Lewis said. "This reception is a great way to tip off our relationship with fans and corporate sponsors, and it will assist hurricane victims as well. That's a slam dunk in my play book."

At the three-hour reception, the public will also have a chance to learn more about the Xplosion's fan-friendly season ticket plans and single-game tickets. The Xplosion is scheduled to play 36 games in its first ABA season, starting Sunday Oct. 30 against the Florida Pit Bulls at Mellon Arena, the Xplosion's home court. The Pit Bulls will be led by Player Coach Tim Hardaway, a former NBA star.

"The Xplosion will showcase the fun and excitement of ABA basketball with a team of talented players with professional and college experience," Lewis added. "The original ABA produced legendary superstars like Julius Erving, Connie Hawkins and Artis Gilmore, to name just a few. We believe the new ABA and the Xplosion will produce future stars too."
