Ask the CEO

Question from Many: "Why do you think the NBA has not accepted the offer to play the ABA in a Katrina/Rita exhibition game?"

Answer: Honestly, I don't know. We do know they are considering it (as yesterday's answer from www.probasketballnews.com indicated). We don't know the inner working of the NBA and any ideas we had would strictly be conjecture. They might feel that they've done enough or that they have their own initiatives planned. They might have contract clauses we're not aware of. They might have some insurance or injury concerns. They might not want to disrupt practice as they are getting ready for the season. We do know that the NBA does care about Hurricane Katrina and Rita victimes by their past generosity, including ownership, teams and players. We see this particular benefit bame as an opportunity to add to what they've done and to what the ABA, its teams and players have done also. With the hundreds of millions of dollars being raised and committed to these terrible disasters and their victims, one game, one set of proceeds might not seem like much. Tell that to a family that has lost its home, its cars, its jobs and even love ones. There will never be a time when even $1 is not important. Sending 10 players to Pittsburgh to play a game is not a difficult decision. And like you all, I would like to know why the NBA has not accepted the challenge. Thanks for your emails. If you have a question, email joenewman@abalive.com.

Note: OurSports Central no longer actively covers the American Basketball Association (ABA) as a professional league due in part to its inability to publish and play a schedule and the transitory nature of many of its teams.
