Pittsburgh Xplosion News Release
PITTSBURGH, September 28, 2007 - To win basketball games, a team must have a sure-fire scoring threat. There weren't many better in the NCAA last season than Trey Johnson, the Xplosion's second round selection in Tuesday's CBA Draft.
Johnson finished his senior season as the second leading scorer in the nation, averaging 27.8ppg, trailing only Reggie Williams (28.1ppg) of Virginia Military Institute.
Playing for Jackson State, the 6-5 guard didn't get nearly the attention that he would have playing in a bigger conference. He was named MVP of the Southwestern Athletic Conference his senior season.
"I didn't play in a top conference," Johnson told USA Today in June. "But that shouldn't matter."
It hasn't mattered that he didn't play on an organized team until his junior year of high school in Jackson, Miss. It also didn't matter that Johnson's first sport was baseball, and that he was drafted as a pitcher by the Kansas City Royals in 2002.
"Johnson is a scorer who can be an immediate contributor for us," Xplosion head coach Carlos Knox said. "I definitely was surprised he was still there [in the second round]."
Despite the fact he didn't play in a power college conference, Johnson is confident that he can excel professionally.
"As I get out on the court and continue to play against the elite players in the nation, I show that I can play with them."
The Xplosion begin their second CBA season November 16 against East Kentucky. Season tickets are now on sale. Visit www.pittsburghxplosion.com or call 877-410-9900 for more information.
