Memphis Xplorers News Release
Southaven, MS-The Memphis Xplorers of the af2 held a press conference at the Pyramid Arena Wednesday.
At that time, the Xplorers announced they are having training camp for the 2005 season at the Pyramid. Memphis General Manager Nate Yoder, Pyramid General Manager Alan Freeman, and Xplorers Head Coach Danton Barto were all on hand to make the announcement to the local media.
Xplorers GM Nate Yoder shared his thoughts on the team venturing into the Pyramid for training camp. "The Pyramid is a great building and a landmark to the city of Memphis. It is shame that it is not being used for any sporting events at this time. However, it is fortunate for us that we have the opportunity to take advantage of its vacancy."
"I am probably the most excited about training camp at the Pyramid," stated Xplorers Head Coach Danton Barto. "Memphis is my home, and having played for the (University of Memphis) Tigers, and the Maddogs (of the CFL), I have always appreciated the Pyramid and its effect on this community."
The Xplorers will begin their training camp on March 16th. Memphis will open its regular season on April 3rd in Bossier Shreveport against the Battle Wings. The regular season home opener is not until week three, when the Xplorers will face their rival, the Arkansas Twisters. That game is schedule for a 7:30pm kickoff that Friday, April 15th.
Currently, the Xplorers play all their home games at the DeSoto Civic Center. Memphis has a lease with the DCC that expires at the end of the 2005 season. Yoder discussed the idea of playing regular season games at the Pyramid. "It is strictly an idea at this point and nothing further, however the door is always open and anything is possible. It is a first class venue and if the conditions and situation permitted us to be there, I would love to call the Pyramid home."
Memphis will have an open tryout on February 5th at the Southaven Park and Recreation Center located at 3335 Pine Tar Alley. Pre-registration is $35, and walk-in rates are $50. Earlier today, Coach Barto guaranteed that at least one participant in the February tryout will be invited to the Pyramid for training camp.
The Xplorers were ten game winners in their 2004 playoff season. For group and season ticket information call 662-393-3761. Memphis Xplorers Arena Football! Back in Black!
