SOUTHAVEN, Miss.—As part of National Library Week, local celebrities came and read to students at Shadow Oaks Elementary in Horn Lake.

Memphis Xplorers wide receiver and defensive back Reginald Perkins stopped by to read "Little Granny Quarterback." As the children listened intently, Perkins read the story of a little old granny and her football adventures. After the reading session, the students had an opportunity to ask questions.

Perkins, who started playing football at the age of 6 with his cousins and neighborhood friends, told the class that football is a rough game, physically and mentally.

"Football is tough, but you can do it if you put your mind to it," Perkins said. "I play and maybe one day you will play at this level, but you have to keep your grades up."

Perkins, a recent cum laude graduate from the University of Memphis, stressed the importance of staying in school, studying and making all A's.

"I graduated with honors from college," he said. "That is the least I could do for my mom, who has always been there for me and pushed me to do my best. I worked hard and got good grades and I want you to do that too."

After the session Perkins signed the book and the Xplorers donated it to the school library.

"Education is so important," Perkins said afterward. "I really enjoyed reading to the kids and I hope that they realize how important it is to finish school."
