Memphis Xplorers News Release
CORDOVA, Tenn.â"Scout! Scout! Sign my shirt! Here's a pen! Hey!" rang the shouts of several Cub Scouts pressing in on Memphis Xplorers mascot Scout the raccoon during lunch break at a Boy Scouts summer day camp at Heartsong Methodist Church on Friday.
The camp is typical of those being held throughout the tri-state area by the Chickasaw Council, the Memphis-based regional office of the Scouts. Eighteen Cub Scout packs, 160 boys in all ranging from 6-10 years of age, converged on the church's campus this week for games, activities and skill building exercises.
"It's entirely volunteer based," Chickasaw Council Eastern District Director Ken Kimble said. "None of the counselors here are paid. We try to keep the fees low, so basically everything we bring in goes right back to the kids."
Each camp is centered around a central theme. This week's camp was "Wild, Wild West." Games and activities included a stage coach ride, lassoing and knot-tying, archery, B.B. gun shooting, "leave no trace" hiking and more.
In addition to the visit from Scout of the Xplorers arena football team, the University of Memphis Tigers football team came to the camp earlier in the week and taught the boys flag football, which is one of the badges Cub Scouts can earn.
"All of the activities are centered around citizenship, character and fitness, which are the three pillars of Scouting," Kimble said.
The Xplorers will have "Scout Night" at their July 24 game at 7 p.m. at the DeSoto Civic Center. All tickets for Scouts and their families are discounted to $8 each, with $3 from every ticket being donated back to the Council's "Scout Reach" program to help send less fortunate Scouts to summer camp.
"Our policy is not to turn away a child for financial reasons," Kimble said.
