Xplorers Make Check Presentation To St. Jude

SOUTHAVEN, Miss â The Memphis Xplorers visited St. Jude Children's Hospital today to donate the proceeds from the Xplorers' jersey auction on June 14th that was sponsored by Hollywood Casino. An oversized check for $2,535 was presented to St. Jude officials in front of the hospital with players, patients and staff in attendance. The Xplorers travel to Bossier City this Friday to take on the Battle Wings. Memphis returns home on July 5th against Tennessee Valley. "Anytime you can help the kids at St. Jude it is always worthwhile," said Xplorers General Manager Greg Griffith. "Any effort to help the kids is important. It was a gratifying experience for both the Xplorers staff and players. For a first time event raising over $2,500 was great and we look forward to doing it again next year bigger and better."
Hollywood Casino, who was the sponsor for the event, continues their involvement with the local community by helping with the auction which took place on the football field after the June 14th game against Birmingham.
"It was great," said St. Jude event marketing representative Ashley Reding. "The Xplorers fans responded wonderfully to the auction. For a first year event the amount they raised was phenomenal. I could not have been happier. The Xplorers' players, coaches, and staff were awesome to deal with. Seeing them with the kids was great."
Money raised from the auction helps to offset the costs of research and treatment for children admitted to St. Jude with cancer or other catastrophic illnesses. Since opening in 1962, St. Jude has helped increase the cure rate for childhood cancer from less than 20 percent to more than 70 percent.
