Memphis Xplorers News Release
SOUTHAVEN, MS --- The Memphis Xplorers embark on the final quarter of the 2006 season as they travel to Macon, GA to face the Knights this Friday night at 6:30 CDT. The Xplorers (9-3) will be attempting to complete a season series sweep over Macon (4-7), achieve their third consecutive 10-plus win season and, more importantly, clinch their third straight playoff berth.
The Xplorers are coming off an offensively impressive 81-53 win over South Georgia last week. QB Brian Jones had one of the great games ever by an Xplorers signal caller. Jones was 22 of 23 passing for 281 yards and eight touchdowns. The eight scoring tosses were a career high for Jones and matched the franchise mark. Jones' performance earned him his third Schutt af2 Offensive Player of the Week Award this season.
OS Kevin Prentiss wasn't too shabby in the game, either. Among his three touchdown receptions, Prentiss caught his 100th career touchdown. He had a total of nine catches for 143 yards and added a 58 yard kick return touchdown; his all-time af2 leading 14th of his career.
Deon Giddens was another star. He scored three touchdowns in the pivotal 2nd quarter, including a 50 yard missed field goal return for a score that gave Memphis a 47-34 lead at the break.
Defensively, Joseph Crear and the rest of the Xplorers front three were relentless in pressuring South Georgia QB Julian Reese all game long.
This week's game starts a stretch for the Xplorers where they will play three of the final four games on the road. Memphis defeated the Knights 62-26 on April 28 at the DCC. Since that loss, the Knights have gone 3-4, have added an explosive OS in Chavis McCollister and brought in former Everett head coach Rickey Foggie as offensive coordinator.
The Knights were on the bye week last week and at 4-7, are still in the American Conference playoff race.
The Xplorers are 2-0 in the all-time series with the Knights.
In personnel news, the Xplorers were assigned 6-4, 265 pound OL/DL Robert MacKey on Wednesday.
