Wright, Rovira Share Sockers Player of the Week Honors
December 7, 2010 - Professional Arena Soccer League (PASL)
San Diego Sockers News Release
After a week which featured the Sockers' most explosive and balanced scoring of the season, midfielder Paul Wright and defender Diego Rovira remained deadlocked after seven rounds of voting for Sockers' Player of the Week. General manager John Kentera finalized the tie by awarding half of the award to both Wright and Rovira.
"This week, any one of four players could have been named Player of the Week, it was a great week," said Kentera, "Rovira and Wright will both be honored for their tremendous contributions to our success." And so it was.
Wright, 41, had his high point night of the young season with two goals and two assists, taking over the team points lead with 11 in four games. His seven assists also lead the Sockers. Wright's goal with 6:56 in the first quarter brought the Sockers level with Louisville 1-1 in the first quarter. He then scored on the power play in the second quarter to give San Diego a 5-2 lead, and assisted on back-to-back goals in the late third quarter to help the Sockers build an insurmountable 9-3 advantage after three quarters.
Rovira, 28, netted his first hat trick of the season and the second of his Sockers career. Diego brought late thunder to the Lightning, scoring with 47 seconds remaining in the first quarter on a left-footed strike from the wing, then ended the third quarter with a short handed blast, potting the goal with only 1.7 seconds left on the clock. It was Rovira's second short-handed goal of the season. Diego finished his hat trick with 5:55 in the fourth on Ze Roberto's second assist of the game. With six goals, Rovira is now second on the team, trailing only Kraig Chiles' seven tallies. Aaron Susi (two goals, two assists) and Chiky Luna (goal, three assists) also received votes in the player of the week voting.
The Sockers (4-0) now embark on a four-game road trip, starting with a PASL-Pro Western Division showdown against Revolucion Tijuana (2-1) at Estadio Furati in Tijuana, Mexico. The game will kick off Saturday, December 11th at 7pm and can be seen exclusively online on 619Sports.Net. San Diego's next home game will be a quarterfinal U.S. Open Cup matchup against the Sockers' developmental team, the San Diego Fusion, at 6:15pm on December 29th.
