
Wranglers Polish Off RoadRunners 5-1 In Game One

PHOENIX, Ariz. - The Las Vegas Wranglers used a four-goal second period to defeat the Phoenix RoadRunners 5-1 in Game 1 of the National Conference Quarterfinals before a crowd of 2,269 at US Airways Center. The RoadRunners will host the Wranglers in Game Two of the best-of-seven National Conference Quarterfinals at 7:11 p.m. Thursday at US Airways Center.
The two clubs traded power play goals in the first period. Las Vegas opened the scoring at 4:00 on the man-advantage when Marco Peluso beat RoadRunners goalie Cody Rudkowsky with a wrist shot to the upper right corner of the net for a 1-0 lead. Phoenix tied the score late in the period when Kris Hogg, in his first professional game, pounced on the loose puck in the slot and snapped it by Wranglers goalie Mike McKenna with 8.6 seconds remaining in the first on the power play to even things up at 1-1.
The Wranglers blew the game open in the second period with a pair of power play goals 21 seconds apart. Derek Edwardson scored on a wrist shot from the left-wing circle at 3:22 of the middle period on a two-man advantage. Aaron Power made it a 3-1 hockey game just 21 seconds later at 3:43 on the power play when he beat Rudkowsky with a one-time slap shot from the blue line. Shawn Limpright and Tyler Mosienko added to the score sheet at 12:54 and 17:13 of the second period respectively to give Las Vegas a 5-1 lead after two periods.
Neither team scored in the third period
Las Vegas out-shot Phoenix 50-29. Rudkowsky stopped 45 shots but took the loss to fall to 0-1 in the playoffs. The RoadRunners went 1-6 on the power play while Las Vegas was 3-7 on the man-advantage.
Notes: Las Vegas tied an ECHL playoff record with 23 shots on goal in the first period and set a club playoff record with 50 shots total...Center Olivier Latendresse opened the series on three day injured reserve...Nine RoadRunners made their professional playoff debuts Tuesday.
