
Wranglers Drop Opener In Front Of 3,102 Energetic Fans

Wichita, Kansas¾ Opening day didn't close quite as nicely as the Wichita Wranglers hoped as they struggled against the Arkansas Travelers. 3,102 excited fans poured into Lawrence Dumont Stadium for the 2004 season opener only to see their troops fall to Arkansas, 6-2.
The Wranglers would strike first on a two out double by first baseman Chad Santos, scoring catcher Mike Tonis who led of the bottom of the fifth with a single. The Travelers quickly responded by posting four runs in the top of the sixth to take a 4-1 lead. In the bottom of the sixth outfielder Dee Brown hit a sacrifice fly to leftfield to score Mel Stocker and pull the wranglers within one, 4-2.
Arkansas posted two more runs in the eight to improve their led to 6-2 and eventually held on for their first victory of the season. The winning pitcher for Arkansas was left-hander Jake Woods (1-0). Woods pitched five innings, allowing 5 hits and 2 runs. Les Walrond recorded the loss for the Wranglers and falls to (0-1). Walrond gave up 4 runs in 51/3 innings. Pitchers Ryan Baerlocher, Bill Keppinger, and J.J. Trujillo also pitched for the Wranglers.
At the plate the Wranglers had six hits resulting in two runs. Leading the way was centerfielder Stocker, who was 2-for-4 with a run, and Santos went 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI.
Wichita falls to (0-1) on the season and will look to right-handed pitcher Danny Tamayo tomorrow for their first win. The Wranglers will face right-hander Rich Fischer, who was 5-11 last season with the Travelers. First pitch tomorrow is set for 7:00 p.m. at Lawrence Dumont Stadium. Friday night is Midwest Dairy Association Team poster and autograph night.
