ESPN\'s \'Dream Job Candidate\' says YES to the RoughRiders

April 8, 2004 - Texas League (TL1)
Frisco RoughRiders News Release

Frisco, TX – The Frisco RoughRiders announced today that a finalist in ESPN's "Dream Job" contest, who just happens to be from Plano, Texas, has agreed to make his debut with the RoughRiders on Saturday, April 24, 2004. Kelly Milligan will throw out the first pitch for the 7:30 pm game (RoughRiders vs. Wichita Wranglers).

Milligan tried out for a spot on ESPN's "Dream Job," a reality television program perhaps best likened to "American Idol" for aspiring sportscasters. On the strength of several auditions, Milligan was chosen as one of 12 finalists to compete for a one-year contract with ESPN, the nation's leader in sports programming. Milligan made it to week five of the show's six-week run, finishing in the top six out of more than 10,000. "The disappointment of not winning was offset by the joy of not having to move to Connecticut, where there is no credible Tex-Mex cuisine to be found," said Milligan. Milligan hopes to use his experience as a springboard to radio or TV work somewhat closer to home and his real "dream job"—a chance to do play-by-play work for a professional baseball or college football team.

While attending college during the 1980s, Kelly Milligan was lured away from his childhood career plans by the prospect of a glamorous and rewarding life in the legal profession. Now, after 12 years spent representing businesses nationwide in employment and labor relations disputes, Milligan is looking to follow in the footsteps of the great Howard Cosell by moving from the courtroom into the world of sports broadcasting. "While some question the sanity behind the move, I see it as getting back to where I started—and where I should have been all along," said Milligan.

Milligan moved to Dallas in 1996, and has worked for two large and prestigious law firms. A break came in 2000, when Milligan was invited to appear on the Husker Power Hour, a weekly college football program on KSKY AM in Dallas. Milligan took over as host of the show in 2001. Today, Milligan and co-hosts Harold Hunter and Bryan Munson are heard throughout North Texas, across Nebraska, and nationwide via the internet. "The show blends in-depth analysis of Nebraska and Big 12 football, recruiting updates, guests from the world of college football (including coaching greats like Tom Osborne and Barry Switzer), and all manner of side commentary on a variety of sports and pop-cultural topics," added Milligan.

After throwing out the first pitch at Dr Pepper/Seven Up Ballpark on April 24th Milligan will join the RoughRiders' broadcast team (Broadcaster Scott Garner and Color Commentator Jimmy Christopher) in the home radio booth. Milligan will do a little play-by-play during the game (broadcasts live on SportsRadio 1700 The Ticket). Milligan, thrilled to get the RoughRiders' invitation, said "the entire night is definitely going to be a dream comes true for me."
