Worcester Bravehearts News Release
WORCESTER - On the one-year anniversary of winning the 2014 Futures Collegiate Baseball League Championship, the Worcester Bravehearts captured a 2-1 win over the Bristol Blues at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field in Game 1 of the 2015 FCBL Championship Series. With the victory the team is one win away from back-to-back league championships.
Bravehearts starter Mike Bruemmel (Wheaton / Bridgewater) set the tone for his team and collected the win, as the southpaw went seven strong innings allowing only one run on three hits while striking out five. Bruemmel allowed his only run in the 7th inning on a one-out RBI triple by Blues third baseman Ryan Costello (CCSU / Weatherford, Connecticut), but he retired the next two batters to escape the jam and hold the lead.
Worcester took an early 1-0 lead in the 1st inning when first baseman Zack Tower (UMass Lowell / Auburn) ripped an RBI single to right field to score catcher TJ Riccio (New Haven / Port Jeff Station, New York).
Designated hitter Alex Sanchez (Galveston / New York, New York) added to the lead with an RBI single in the 5th inning to score shortstop Gavin Tristan (Lamar / Richmond, Texas). Tristan has been on a roll in the playoffs, as he has a .714 on-base percentage and leads the league with five walks and four runs scored.
Bristol starter Steve Wallace was charged with the loss, as he allowed two runs on four hits with three walks and three strikeouts.
In the 8th inning, reliever Clayton Dostal (Galveston / Richmond, Texas) retired the side in order, and Miles Sheehan (Franklin Pierce / Madison, Connecticut) allowed one hit in the 9th but collected the final three outs to earn the save.
With the win, the Worcester Bravehearts can clinch their second consecutive league title in Game 2 of the FCBL Championship Series at 7 p.m. Saturday night, Aug. 15 on Muzzy Field in Bristol, Connecticut. If necessary, Game 3 will take place on Sunday, Aug. 16 in Bristol.
