Worcester Tornadoes top Sussex Skysox 11-5

AUGUSTA, N.J. - The Worcester Tornadoes pounded out 17 hits en route to a 14-5 victory over the Sussex Skyhawks at Skylands Park in Augusta, N.J. on Opening Day in the Can-Am league Thursday night.

Worcester first baseman Chris Colabello went 4-for-6 with three runs scored and Francisco Caraballo finished 3-for-5 with a home run to help power the Tornadoes.

Matt Weagle (1-0) picked up the win for Worcester and Tom Cochran (1 save) earned a save after throwing four innings in relief for the Tornadoes.

Sussex starter Gary Galvez gave up five runs in five innings and took the loss for the Skyhawks.

Worcester catcher Alex Trezza's three run home run to right field in the top of the first inning put Worcester on the board and the Tornadoes never looked back. Trezza finished the night 2-for-3 with 3 RBI.

With the score 3-2 in favor of Worcester, the Tornadoes added two more runs in the top of the fifth inning when Rico Santana's single skipped through the infield to chase home Chuck Jeroloman and Chris Colabello.

Worcester added two more in the top of the sixth before Kevin Rios hit a three-run home run for Sussex in the bottom of the seventh inning to help the Skyhawks close to within three, but that was as close as they would come.

Jay Yaconetti finished with three hits for Sussex.

The teams return to action tomorrow night at 6:30 in game two of the four game set.
