Worcester Bravehearts News Release
Bristol, Conn. - The Worcester Bravehearts blew a late-game lead to the Martha's Vineyard Sharks on Sunday, July 12 and ended up losing that game 11-5. But despite losing another late- inning lead in the 9th inning to the Bristol Blues on Wednesday night, July 15 on Muzzy Field, the Bravehearts clinched a 9-6 win over the first place Blues.
Worcester starter Dylan Collett (Saint Leo / Altamont, New York) pitched a gem, as he threw six scoreless innings, gave up four hits and struck out four. However, he could not pick up the win.
After four scoreless innings, the Bravehearts broke through in the 5th inning with two runs thanks to an error by Blues third baseman Ryan Costello (CCSU / Weatherford, Connecticut). RBI singles from first baseman Zack Tower (UMass Lowell / Auburn) and center fielder Ian Strom (UMass Lowell / Hopedale) gave Worcester a 4-0 lead. Strom went 4-5 in the game and raised his average to .418 on the season.
Bristol got a run back in the 8th, but when Worcester pitcher Charlie Butler (Maine / Marlborough) came in for the save in the 9th inning, the Blues tied the game with three runs in the bottom half of the inning.
The game went to the 11th where the Bravehearts exploded for five runs thanks to an RBI double by outfielder Charlie Ameer (Cochise / Weston, Connecticut), a sacrifice fly by TJ Riccio (New Haven / Port Jeff Station, New York) and RBI base hits by Gavin Tristan (Lamar / Richmond, Texas) and Dante Ricciardi (Georgetown / West Boylston).
Blues pitcher Riley Streit (Amherst / Oxford, Connecticut) took the loss, as he gave up two runs on two hits in three innings of work.
Butler gave up two additional runs in the bottom half of the 11th inning but collected the final three outs to get the win for Worcester.
