Worcester Needs No Sunscreen After 4-1 Win over Solar Bears

Orlando, FL - The Worcester Railers HC (22-21-4-2, 50pts) scored revenge in a 4-1 win over the host Orlando Solar Bears (22-24-5-1, 50pts) in front of 4,393 fans at the Amway Center on Friday evening. The Railers and Solar Bears battle again on Saturday night in Orlando to finish off a 3-in-3 set.

Tommy Kelley, Matt Lane, Barry Almeida, and Kyle McKenzie scored for Worcester while Mitch Gillam made a franchise record 42 saves in net for his ninth win of the season. Ben Masella added three assists from the blue line as the Railers improved to 1-1-0-0 on their season long seven game road trip.

The Railers grabbed a 2-0 first period lead as Mitch Gillam was strong in net making 11 saves in net. Yanick Turcotte won the puck on the forecheck and zipped it to the slot where Tommy Kelley (3rd) ripped the puck top shelf past Cal Heeter at 5:53. Worcester went ahead 2-0 with a power play goal as a Ben Masella shot from the center point was deflected by Matt Lane (8th) at 8:58.  Shots were 12-11 Orlando through 20 minutes but the Railers took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission.

Worcester would score two more goals in the middle frame and Mitch Gillam remained strong in net with 16 more saves. Barry Almeida (16th) slid home a rebound just pass the goal line at 6:11 and Kyle McKenzie (3rd) fired home a 60-foot shot while Cal Heeter was out of the net at 7:58. The fourth goal would spell the end of the night for Cal Heeter as he was replaced by Mackenzie Skapski. The Railers led 4-0 after 40 minutes despite getting outshot 27-23.

Max Novak (15th) got the Solar Bears on the board at 11:04 of the third period with a rebound score to ruin Gillam's shutout bid and cut the Railers lead to 4-1. Gillam made 15 more saves in the third period as Worcester held on for the 4-1 road victory.

Cal Heeter (13-13-4) made 13 saves on 17 shots for Orlando...Mackenzie Skapski was the backup for Orlando and made 18 saves in relief.... Mitch Gillam (9-10-0) made 42 saves on 43 shots for Worcester... Chris Habazin was the backup goalie and served as the emergency backup as Eamon McAdam was suspended to games by the ECHL for his game misconduct on Thursday.... Worcester went 1-for-4 on the power play while Orlando went 0-for-4...Josh Monk (inj), Ashton Rome (inj), Vinny Muto, and Brian Bowen did not dress for Worcester... Kellen Jones, Mike Cornell, and Matty Gaudreau are currently on recall with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.... Worcester improved to 10-10-2-2 on the road this season.... Connor Doherty picked up his 3rd fighting major with a 2nd period scrap with Sean Zimmerman...Chris Saracino had five shots for Worcester...Worcester had nine players with points.

On Saturday, Feb 16 the Railers battle the Solar Bears in Orlando, FL for the third of a three games in three-day stretch in Orlando as the seven-game road trip continues.
