Worcester Bravehearts News Release
BROCKTON - The Worcester Bravehearts are one win away from returning to the FCBL Championship Series for the second straight year.
Worcester punched its ticket to the semifinals with a 3-0 win over the Brockton Rox in a single- elimination playoff game on Wednesday night, Aug. 12 at Campanelli Stadium in Brockton.
With the season on the line, the Bravehearts turned to their ace Dylan Collett (Saint Leo / Altamont, New York), and he did not disappoint. The southpaw tossed 6.2 shutout innings with six hits and two strikeouts and collected the win in the outing.
Bravehearts shortstop Gavin Tristan (Lamar / Richmond, Texas) scored all three runs in the game and went 2-2 at the plate with two walks. Despite going 0-5, designated hitter Alex Sanchez (Galveston / New York, New York) knocked in Tristan on ground ball outs in the 3rd, 5th and 9th innings to record three RBI.
Brockton starter Zack Kirby (Framingham State / Rochester), who was named FCBL pitcher of the year before the game, was chased early after giving up two runs on five hits in four innings on the mound.
In the bottom of the 9th, Bravehearts reliever Logan Fullmer (Maine / Lebanon, Pennsylvania) allowed the first two Rox to reach base but retired the next three batters in order to pick up the save. Fellow reliever Miles Sheehan (Franklin Pierce / Madison, Connecticut) went 1.1 innings and struck out three of the five batters he faced.
In other league action, the Martha's Vineyard Sharks defeated the Pittsfield Suns 4-1, The Bristol Blues beat the Torrington Titans 3-1, and the Nashua Silver Knights upset the North Shore Navigators 5-2.
The Sharks will now host the Bravehearts in a one-game semifinal at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 13 at The Shark Tank in Oak Bluffs. The winner of this matchup will face the winner between the Nashua Silver Knights and Bristol Blues in a best-of-three series beginning on Friday, Aug. 14.
