Sioux Fall, SD - Behind eight dominant innings from Grady Wood, the Sioux Falls Canaries took the final game of the three-game set against the Wichita Wingnuts, 2-1 at Sioux Falls Stadium.
Though the Wingnuts got on the board and took an early lead in the Top of the first inning, Wood limited the damage to just one run and was masterful the rest of the way.
After allowing a solo home run to Christian Stringer, Wood settled down and allowed just three more hits over his eight innings of work. Wood struck out seven, didn't allow a walk and gave up just one run on four hits over his eight innings of work.
The Canaries went scoreless through the first two innings of play against Garrett Gould, but off the bat of Jabari Henry, Sioux Falls took the lead in the bottom of the third.
Brett Marr blooped a one-out double into shallow right before Henry launched a two-run home run, his fourth of the series, over the left field wall to give the Birds' a 2-1 lead.
And with Wood on the hill, that's all the Birds needed. Jose Ortega relieved Wood in the ninth and worked around two hits to nail down his sixth save of the year.
Wood picks up his fifth win of the year for the Birds, who move to 21-27 on the season. Gould takes the loss for the Wingnuts, who fall to 35-14 on the year.
9,560 fans attended the Canaries three-game series against the Wingnuts, with 2,141 on hand to see the finale.
The Canaries head to St. Paul on Monday to start a seven-game road trip, starting with four games against the St. Paul Saints at CHS Field. RHP Troy Marks (3-4, 4.41) will take the hill for the Birds facing Saints' RHP Jason Creasy (4-4, 5.06 ERA). First pitch is at 7:05 in St. Paul and you can tune into all the Canaries action on the road on KWSN 1230-AM, 98.1-FM.
