Woodchucks drop nail-biter to Waterloo, 5-4

WAUSAU-June 14, 2011-The Wisconsin Woodchucks dropped the first of a two-game home set with Waterloo Tuesday night, falling to the Bucks by a score of 5-4.

The 'Chucks would fall to 5-8 - good for seventh place in the South Division - as Waterloo improved to .500 at 7-7.

Bucks' starter Shane Broyles (2-0) took the win, while Jonathon Boersma (0-1) took tough-luck loss for the 'Chucks in relief.

The first three-and-one-half innings went smoothly for both starters, as 'Chucks newbie Tom Briner faced only two batters over the minimum and the Bucks' Broyles mowed down the Woodchucks in order through three.

In the bottom half of the fourth, however, the 'Chucks would break through on Broyles- getting a leadoff single by Seth Batty, who would advance to third on a following Garrett Yriogyen single. After Austin Coleman would get called down on strikes, Carlos Escobar Jr. would fly out to the warning track in right, allowing Batty to score.

With a stiff wind blowing out to centerfield, two outs, and a man on first base, Mike Gerber would record his first Woodchucks hit- clobbering a homerun to straight center, making the score 3-0 in the 'Chucks favor.

The Bucks would get one back in the fifth, as a seemingly improved Woodchucks defense would begin to unravel once more. With two down, Mike Gerber would drop a lazy fly ball to deep right, prolonging an inning that would lead to a following walk and Davis Hendricks RBI single.

With oft-used reliever Jonathon Boersma taking over for Briner in the sixth, Cameron Perkins would lead off the inning with his second single, before the 'Chucks would fail to turn a double play on a Jordan Adams groundball. After Jeremy Lucas hit a single, the Bucks had two on with one down, before Jeff Popick would reach on another Woodchucks fielding error.

Jeremy Hill would then record an RBI groundout, before Drew Walsh would knock in two more Bucks' runs, giving Waterloo the 4-3 lead.

All four Waterloo runs were unearned, as untimely errors proved disastrous again for an otherwise effective Woodchucks pitching performance.

Discounting their three-run outburst in the third inning, the 'Chucks offense was stymied by Bucks' starter Shane Broyles- who went seven innings, giving up six hits and one walk, while striking out eight.

To begin the eighth inning, Waterloo would increase their lead with a leadoff moon-shot off Woodchucks reliever Ryan Iverson. Waterloo would make their first call to the bullpen in the 'Chucks half of the eighth, as Joe Zwierzynski came on and retired the Woodchucks in five pitches.

Down 5-3 and headed into the final half of the ninth, the Bucks elected to remove Zwierzynski in favor of Jake Thompson - who would issue three walks around one fielders choice, before being removed for Kyle Kramp.

Kramp would allow Robbie De La Cruz to drive in Tyler Heineman on a sacrifice fly to center, but would record the save as the Bucks' second baseman Andrew Ewing robbed Seth Batty of game-tying hit- leaping into the air to pick a screaming liner up the middle - ending the game 5-4.

Waterloo and Wisconsin will meet again at Athletic Park on Wednesday, as Richard Klein is set to take on the Bucks' Mike Wisecarver, with a 6:35 first pitch.
