CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa â Brandon Wood of the Kernels' hit three home runs to shade Quad Cities' Scott Whitrock in the finals of the Bud Light Home Run Derby on Tuesday night. The contest took place before the 40th Midwest League All-Star Game at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
Wood, the No. 1 pick of the Anaheim Angels in the June 2003 draft, and Whitrock each hit two home runs in the first round to advance from the field of eight to the championship.
Whitrock went first in the finals and again hit two home runs.
Wood got to six outs before hitting his first home run, then popped off three in his next four swings against Kane County pitching coach Fernando Arroyo.
Wood won $100 and Whitrock $50.
Both Wood and Whitrock have hit eight home runs. Top home run hitters Brian Dopirak and Kevin Collins from Lansing, with 20 and 19 respectively, did not hit a home run in the first round.
