Wolves Kick Off Athletic Shoe Drive

February 10, 2010 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Chicago Wolves News Release

The Chicago Wolves and the Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook County (SWANCC) have teamed up to host the first Wolves Athletic Shoe Drive, presented by Flood Brothers Disposal and Recycling Services, during home games on Wed., Feb. 17; Sat., Feb. 20; and Sun., Feb. 21.

The rubber soles will be recycled and broken down, then turned into playing surfaces like tracks, basketball courts, parks and foam hockey mats. In addition, the drive will help prevent thousands of shoes from filling up our landfills. For each new or used athletic shoe that is donated during these games, fans will receive a raffle ticket for a chance to win a pair of game-used autographed skates.

Any shoes that are unable to be recycled will be donated to Soles for Souls, a nonprofit organization that donates used shoes overseas. Currently, Soles for Souls is sending all donated shoes toward the Haiti Earthquake Relief Effort.

"This is our first time organizing a drive of this sort and we are excited to be working with recycling," said Vice President of Operations Courtney Mahoney. "Some of the recycled materials will go into making hockey mats, so we feel like it is a great fit and look forward to taking on this new endeavor."

Shoes must be clean athletic shoes with no metal. Please, no Vans, dress shoes, cleats, sandals or boots.
