BRAMPTON, Ont. - Wojtek Wolski will join the Colorado Avalanche for the Stanley Cup playoffs, the National Hockey League club announced Wednesday.
Wolski, who arrived in Denver on Tuesday, is eligible to play for Colorado in a best-of-seven Western Conference quarterfinal against the Dallas Stars. The series opens Saturday at Dallas.
A first-round choice, 21st overall, in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft, Wolski started the season with Colorado, scoring two goals and adding four assists for six points in nine games before being reassigned to the Brampton Battalion of the Ontario Hockey League on Oct. 26.
"I'm happy to be called up," Wolski, a Mississauga resident who turned 20 on Feb. 24, said by telephone from Denver.
"I'll be working hard, and we'll see how it goes. I'm a lot more confident this time. We haven't really talked too much about what my role will be, but I think I'll be playing centre. Dallas is a great team, and I'm sure the atmosphere will be great for those games."
The Battalion's first-round pick, third overall, in the 2002 OHL Priority Selection, Wolski set numerous club single-season, playoff and career records.
Wolski's Battalion season records include 47 goals, 81 assists and 128 points in 2005-06, when he finished third in OHL scoring despite playing just 56 games. He also set club marks with 30 power-play goals and six shorthanded goals.
Wolski earned seven points, a Battalion single-game record, on four goals and three assists in a 9-4 win Jan. 22 over the visiting Erie Otters. He finished the regular season on an 18-game points streak, equaling the club record set by defenceman Rostislav Klesla in 2000-01.
Wolski set club career records with 130 goals, 198 assists and 328 points. His 59 career power-play goals, nine career shorthanded scores and 18 game-winning goals are team marks. Wolski's 253 career games are second to Chris Rowan's 262 in Battalion history.
Wolski has 19 goals, 19 assists and 38 points in 40 playoff games, all club career records. He is the only Battalion player to score three goals in a postseason game, doing it April 4, 2003, in a 7-0 win over the visiting Toronto St. Michael's Majors in the first game of an Eastern Conference semifinal.
Wolski's outstanding 2005-06 season included four consecutive OHL Player of the Month nods, earned from December through March, and he was honoured as Player of the Week three times.
He was named to the OHL's first All-Rookie team in 2002-03 and to the first All-Star team the next season. He represented the Battalion at three OHL All-Star Classics and was named the most valuable player of the 2006 game Feb. 1 at Belleville.
