Angelidis Named OHL Humanitarian of the Year
April 20, 2006 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL) News Release
Toronto - The Ontario Hockey League today announced Owen Sound Attack forward Mike Angelidis is the Dan Snyder Memorial Award winner as the OHL's Humanitarian of the Year for the 2005-06 season.
Angelidis, a 20-year-old native of North York, Ontario established himself as a goodwill ambassador in the City of Owen Sound and throughout the Grey and Bruce Counties. As a fourth year player with the team Mike was called upon to visit several public schools as a representative of the Ontario Hockey League and the Owen Sound Attack. Throughout his time in Owen Sound Mike has donated many hours to local charitable organization.
In particular, Mike spent a great deal of time with children who had various learning disabilities. He was able to build a rapport with these students and decided that he wanted to raise funds for the Disabled Learning Units of the all of the schools in Grey and Bruce Counties. Mike along with members of the Attack business team came up with the idea of hosting a team skills competition and use the event to collect donations for the charity. Angelidis also elicited the help of one particular student from the local Beavercrest School Disabled Learning Unit, T.J. Walton. Mike and T.J. developed a strong bond as soon as they first met and were able to co-host the first ever Owen Sound Attack - Bell Skills Competition.
By the time the fundraising event was over, more than $ 5,500 was collected in support of the Disabled Learning Units, including a sizeable donation by the Attack players themselves. On May 16, Mike will receive recognition and an award from the Bluewater and District School Board for his efforts.
On the ice, Angelidis had an exceptional year scoring 53 goals and 78 points while taking on a leadership role with the Attack as an associate captain.
Each year the OHL awards a player that has demonstrated outstanding qualities as a positive role model in the community with the Dan Snyder Award. The Ontario Hockey League Board of Governors announced in 2003 that the OHL Humanitarian of the Year award would be renamed in recognition of the former Owen Sound Platers captain, who was twice named his team's humanitarian of the year in recognition of his tremendous efforts in supporting community activities.
