Connecticut Whale News Release
HARTFORD, June 16, 2009: The Hartford Wolf Pack Community Foundation, Inc., at its spring meeting June 3, gave the go-ahead to $15,000 in grant funding. Benefiting from the donations were five separate organizations: Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Connecticut, Riverfront Recapture, the Channel 3 Kids Camp, Covenant to Care for Children and the YWCA of New Britain, CT.
MADD Connecticut was granted $5,000 to support their youth program efforts. One of these is "Youth in Action", which partners young people with law enforcement in order to reduce underage drinking by limiting social and retail availability of alcohol to those under 21, and to support the enforcement of underage drinking laws. The other is the MADD "Youth Leadership Power Camp", the goal of which is to equip a generation of youth with the knowledge and skills necessary to help reduce alcohol and drug use, and their related harms, in their schools and communities.
The grant to Riverfront Recapture was in the amount of $4,000, and was earmarked to support the organization's 2009 Summer Youth Employment program. Entitled "Science on the River", the 2009 Summer Youth Employment program offers a comprehensive learning and working experience for disadvantaged Hartford teenagers, as they use "Crittercam" video technology to study behaviors of snapping turtles in the Connecticut River.
The Channel 3 Kids Camp received a grant of $3,000, to cover the ice-time costs for campers to participate in a summer skating program at the Bolton Ice Palace in Bolton, CT. The Channel 3 Kids Camp provides affordable overnight camping experiences for lower-income families, foster children and families in need, with programs designed to support at-risk youth in their personal and interpersonal development, and to assist them in learning concrete skills.
Covenant to Care for Children, an agency that provides help to children suffering from abuse, neglect and poverty, received a donation of $2,000. Those funds will be used to expand Covenant to Care for Children's mentoring services, which match at-risk, abused and neglected children and adolescents with trained and caring mentors.
YWCA of New Britain received a grant in the amount of $1,000, which will go to the YWCA's STRIVE (Strength, Teamwork, Respect Individuals, Vision and Excellence) program. The STRIVE initiative services 60-75 at-risk girls of middle-school age in New Britain, with activities that stress positive character development, enhance academic performance, provide skill training and positive adult role models, and encourage healthy recreational outlets.
The stated mission of the Hartford Wolf Pack Community Foundation is to help fund charitable and non-profit endeavors that offer support to inner-city youth, amateur sport, and promote the health, education and well being of Connecticut's children.
