BISMARCK, N.D. March 9, 2008: Dakota Wizards starting guard Blake Ahearn scored a career high 45 points and nine assists in front of nearly four thousand fans to beat the visiting divisional rival Fort Wayne Mad Ants 135 - 129 this afternoon at the Bismarck Civic Center.
Ahearn, now averaging 29.1 points since leaping into the starting lineup 12 games ago, was 14 for 14 from the charity stripe to bring his current free throw's consecutive made streak to 67 straight only missing seven on the season (174-181). With his 45-point mark, Ahearn sets foot into the Wizards record book tied for sixth for most points scored in a single game in team history.
"Blake was unstoppable today", said Wizards Head Coach Duane Ticknor. "We always say free throws win games and that has never been more apparent than tonight. The ball went in today and we played great defense."
The Wizards, now 22-16 on the season was 39-42 from the free throw line good for 92.9 percent, while shooting 60% from the field all together. Forward Rod Benson chipped in his fourth straight double double nailing 26 points and grabbing 15 rebounds. Guard Tony Gipson completed the victory with a season high 23 points to go with his eight assist.
Fort Wayne falls to 13-23 on the season and had seven players finish in double figures led by forward Roderick Wilmont off the bench with 30 points and seven assist. Starting guard Earl Calloway had 23 points in the loss while forward Corey Minnifield had 16 points on the night.
The Wizards and Fort Wayne will face off again on Tuesday March 11th tip set for 7:00 pm CT. Dakota leads the season series three games to zero as the two divisional rivals meet five more times this month.
