Sporting Kansas City News Release
KANSAS CITY, MO (Monday, October 17, 2005) - The Kansas City Wizards today announced their end of the year award winners. For the second straight year, forward Josh Wolff earned the Wizards Budweiser Golden Boot in leading the team in scoring as well as being named Honda Team MVP. Defender Nick Garcia was named the Wizards Defender of the Year and Jimmy Conrad was named the U.S. Soccer Foundation Humanitarian of the Year.
"I commend our award winners for the year each has had on and off the field," said General Manager Curt Johnson. "Josh, Nick and Jimmy come to work every day, perform at a high level on game day and understand and relish their role in the community."
Wolff, 28, led the Wizards in scoring with 10 goals, matching a career high, and recorded a career-best 10 assists. His 10 goals put him in a tie for 9th in MLS in scoring and his 10 assists were good enough for 5th in the League. He appeared in 22 matches this season, all starts.
Garcia, an experienced veteran at only 26 years of age, enjoyed one of the finest seasons of his six-year MLS career, earning Wizards Defender of the Year honors for the first time. He showed his versatility in defense, playing the majority of the season as a right back, but also spent time as a central defender and even played as a left back when called upon. He started and appeared in 30 matches on the year for the Wizards.
Jimmy Conrad was named the Wizards Humanitarian of the Year for the second consecutive season for his continued efforts in the Kansas City community. He actively takes part in numerous community and charity events throughout the season including his involvement with the National Sports Center for the Disabled, the "Shave to Save" promotion for the American Cancer Society, in which he shaved his head in support of cancer patients and cancer research and for his continued work with the University of Kansas Medical Hospital and Children's Mercy Hospital.
