WITHERSPOON TAKES HOME ALL-LEAGUE DEFENSIVE HONORS
Revs centerfielder selected to Atlantic League's Red, White and Blue All-Defensive Team
(October 12, 2017 - York, Pa.): Travis Witherspoon, centerfielder of the 2017 Atlantic League champion York Revolution, has been selected to the Atlantic League's Red, White and Blue All-Defensive Team, it was announced today. Witherspoon is one of three outfielders and nine players selected to the post-season team which honors defensive excellence during the 2017 season. Players were selected through voting from league club managers, executives and media.
Witherspoon led a Revolution defense that ranked near the top of the league in team fielding percentage all season. The speedy centerfielder led the league in put outs (357) and total chances (367) among outfielders, and totaled seven outfield assists while committing only three errors, good for a .992 fielding percentage which tied a franchise record for a single-season (Sean Smith, 2014).
The Revs finished with a .979 team fielding percentage, tied for the league's third-highest and matching a franchise single-season record. Their .466 team range factor ranked second-highest in the league. Not only was outfield defense a notable strength, but the infield defense was strong as well, as the Revs led the league with 144 double plays turned.
"Our defense was a big reason for our team success this season, and Travis provided outstanding defense for us in center field every night," stated Revolution manager Mark Mason. "Anything hit in the air, if it wasn't over the fence, our outfielders typically caught it. He made really tough plays look easy on a nightly basis, and that provided a big boost to our pitching staff."
Witherspoon was a big part of York's success at the plate as well, batting .275 with eight home runs, 48 RBI, seven triples, and 19 stolen bases, earning a midseason Atlantic League All-Star selection. It was his glove work that earned him post-season accolades.
"I take pride in defense," said Witherspoon on SportsRadio 1350 WOYK during the 2017 season. "During the course of a season you go through ups and downs at the plate, but defensively you should never go in a slump. It's the preparation of being focused, prepared, and expecting to have the ball hit toward you. I take pride in it and it's something with which I try to help our pitchers."
This marks the third consecutive season in which the Atlantic League has selected a Red, White and Blue All-Defensive Team. The honor, based on a player's defensive abilities during the regular season, commemorates the red and blue stitched Rawlings baseball that was adopted as the league's official baseball during in 2015.
