Salem Red Sox News Release

Winston-Salem, NC-The Salem Avalanche, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Houston Astros, charged for a run in the ninth Wednesday afternoon on Ernie Shore Field but fell short of the homestanding Warthogs 2-1. Salem (10-20) had the tying run at second base when the final out was made.

Salem, two-hit in the first eight innings, trailed by a pair of runs as the ninth inning opened. With one out, Collin DeLome singled to left field. Next, Mark Ori bounced a ball to second that Dale Mollenhauer threw high to second base. Greg Paiml nabbed the throw in time to throw Ori out at first, but DeLome was deemed safe at second base. Immediately after, Jimmy Van Ostrand doubled down the left-field boundary to bring DeLome home and cut the lead to one. Tim Torres, though, flied out to left against Henry Mabee to end the rally.

Sergio Severino and Matt Long each threw successfully in a starting role as Severino allowed just one earned run on three hits while Long flung five innings of shutout baseball while striking seven out.

The lone run Severino surrendered came in the fifth inning. With two out, Freddie Thon rolled a single to center and Greg Paiml walked. The next batter, Francisco Hernandez, socked a double to left that scored Thon to create the first run of the game. On the play, Paiml was thrown out at home.

In the seventh, Winston-Salem nicked reliever Joel Santo for another run. Leadoff batter John Shelby III lobbed a ball on the left side of the infield that Jhon Florentino couldn't find in the air. It fell for a leadoff double. After Shelby stole third, a wild pitch brought him home for the 2-0 lead.

Salem aims for the series split Thursday night as lefty Douglas Arguello faces right-hander John Ely. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00.
