WALKER, PITCHING GUIDE DASH TO WIN
Steele Walker posted a three-hit night on Tuesday, and Zach Lewis, Bennett Sousa and Will Kincanon combined to allow just one run, as the Dash claimed a 4-1 victory over the Lynchburg Hillcats at BB&T Ballpark. On his 23rd birthday, Walker got Winston-Salem on the board early. After Mitch Roman drew a one-out walk, Walker laced a double into the left-center field gap, scoring Roman to make it 1-0. The star outfielder finished the night 3-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI. Meanwhile, on the mound, the trio of Lewis, Sousa and Kincanon combined to limit the Hillcats to just one run on eight hits. Sousa earned the win by tossing 2.1 scoreless frames while allowing just one hit, and Kincanon earned the save by pitching 1.2 scoreless innings.
VAUGHN PROMOTED TO THE DASH
Infielder Andrew Vaughn, who was picked by the Chicago White Sox out of the University of California-Berkeley with the third overall selection in the 2019 Draft, has earned his first career promotion to High-A Winston-Salem, the White Sox announced on Wednesday. Prior to joining the White Sox system, Vaughn had an incredible career at Cal. As a sophomore in 2018, the first baseman won the Golden Spikes Award as the best amateur baseball player in the United States and the Pac-12 Player of the Year. Vaughn posted a .402/.531/.819 batting line, while hitting 23 home runs and striking out just 18 times. Vaughn is the highest drafted player in Cal history.
FIRST-ROUNDERS IN WINSTON
Since 2014, the Dash have had the White Sox first-round pick (or picks) in five out of the last six years, with the lone exception coming in 2017 when Jake Burger finished out his season with Low-A Kannapolis. Here is the full look over the years:
2014: LHP Carlos Rodon (3rd overall)
2015: RHP Carson Fulmer (8th overall)
2016: C Zack Collins (10th overall) and RHP Zack Burdi (26th overall)
2018: INF Nick Madrigal (4th overall)
2019: INF Andrew Vaughn (3rd overall)
A THIRD STOP FOR CAVANERIO
Right-hander Jorgan Cavanerio will make his 14th start as a White Sox farmhand on Wednesday. The Venezuela native was signed by the White Sox as a minor league free agent on May 10 after he was released by the Seattle Mariners. Prior to joining the Dash, Cavanerio pitched for Double-A Arkansas in Seattle's system, going 2-0 with a 7.88 ERA in seven outings. Cavanerio has also pitched in the Marlins system during his time in Minor League Baseball, signing with them when they were the Florida Marlins in 2011. The Dash are 10-3 in Cavanerio's starts. In seven second-half starts, Cavanerio is 4-0 with a 2.32 ERA.
THE GIVE AND TAKE OFFENSIVELY
The offense has been up and down for Winston-Salem in the second half. Over the first 38 games of the second half, Winston-Salem has scored just 144 runs, equating to about 3.8 runs per game. Despite some early offensive struggles to start the second half, the Dash are the only team in the Carolina League that is in the top three in batting average (3rd, .252), on-base percentage (1st, .334) and slugging percentage (2nd, .384). Meanwhile, the Dash are third in homers (73).
NOT MUCH SEPARATION
Outside of three games, the Dash have played contests where the margin of victory or defeat was more than four runs in the second half. Here is the breakdown of the Dash's record in those 35 games:
One-run games: 5-8
Two-run games: 4-5
Three-run games: 5-3
Four-run games: 3-2
