Winning Streak Snapped At Five
July 30, 2008 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Lancaster Stormers News Release
Brian Adams and a pair of relievers held the surging Lancaster Barnstormers to only five hits early Wednesday as the Somerset Patriots captured the middle game of a three-game series, 5-1.
The loss ended Lancaster's season-high five-game winning streak.
Adams (8-5), the reigning Eastern League Pitcher of the Year, returned to his 2007 form yielding the five hits in 7 2/3 innings while walking three and striking out nine. He held a shutout into the eighth inning before Jutt Hileman broke it up with a leadoff homer to left field.
Through the first seven innings, the Barnstormers had only one runner reach second base on singles by Hileman and Lloyd Turner in the third.
Somerset, which had threatened in the first two innings, finally scored on Jason Scobie (1-1) in the third. Josh Pressley doubled down the third base line and scored when Matt Hagen's drive to left center barely eluded a racing Mike Woods for a second straight two-bagger.
Jason Belcher led off the sixth with his sixth homer of the season for a 2-0 lead. Scobie walked Teuris Olivares and Gera Alvarez in succession before leaving. Sendy Rleal got two quick outs, then allowed a base hit to center by Elliot Ayala. A second run scored when the ball skipped beyond Hileman for an error.
Pressley's second double and a single up the middle by Belcher produced the final Somerset run in the seventh inning.
Adams left the game with two outs and a runner at first in the eighth. Jason Richardson threw four straight balls to Matt LeCroy, who was 0-for-3 on the day, to end his 20-game hitting streak. He also walked Danny Gonzalez on four pitches to load the bases. Closer Brian Reith was summoned, and he got Manny Mejia to ground to first ending the threat. Reith tossed an uneventful ninth to earn his sixth save.
NOTES: Mike Woods' nine game streak ended as well...Lancaster is 0-3 in day games in July, all on Wednesday mornings on the road...The Barnstormers will send Nick Renault (3-6) to the mound on Thursday evening against Jim Magrane (4-5, 4-7)...Game time is 7:05
