July 30, 2008 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Newark Bears News Release

NEWARK, NJ - Newark Bears starter Mike Bumstead shut out the York Revolution through eight innings en route to a 5-1 win at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium on Wednesday evening.

Bumstead (11-6) faced one batter and gave up one run, a solo home run by Chris Ashby in the top of the ninth, to make the game 5-1. He allowed six hits, walked two, and struck out seven in eight innings of work. Bumstead now leads the Atlantic League with eleven wins on the season, also marking his single-season career high.

The Bears loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the second and all three base runners scored on a double by Vic Gutierrez. Gutierrez was thrown out trying to stretch the double into a triple, but his three RBI gave the Bears an early 3-0 lead.

The 3-0 lead remained until the bottom of the seventh inning, when Jose Herrera blasted a two-run homer over the right field wall. The homer was his ninth of the season, his second in as many days, and made the score 5-0.

Revolution starter Dave Gil (3-4) picked up the loss, allowing five runs on eight hits over seven innings of work.

The Bears finish their homestand against the Revolution tomorrow morning with an 11:05 game. The Bears will send Benito Baez (4-4) to the mound, facing off against Wayne Franklin (5-3). The Newark Bears play their home games at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium, conveniently located off of Route 280, across the street from the Newark-Broad St train station, and just minutes from Route 78 and the New Jersey Turnpike.
