Winning Streak Needed

Up and down - this past week, the entire season.

First, the Jackals sweep the first-place Quebec Capitales, who are enjoying a dream season on top of the Frontier League's East Division. Then, they get swept by the barely-.500 Tri-City ValleyCats.

Just when it looked like New Jersey may have turned the corner and was ready for a late-season run at the league playoffs, along comes a middle-of-the-pack opponent to hand them three straight losses over the weekend, concluding with Sunday's 6-4 defeat in Troy, NY.

Up and down. It's been the story all year long for the local team that's now 6½ games behind the Sussex County Miners, who are in third place in the standings and would currently claim the final wild-card spot in the postseason playoffs.

Can the Jackals catch them? Absolutely. There's still plenty of time to do it. But, New Jersey would need to do something it hasn't done all year, the one thing manager Brooks Carey has been saying was needed all year - put together a nice little winning streak or two and knock it off with all these up-and- down results.

How up and down has it been? The Jackals have only been swept three times all year. And, they've managed three sweeps of their own. All the rest of the season has been up-and-down split series.

New Jersey's longest winning streak was six in a row, beginning before the July all-star break and finishing right after the week off. Other than that, the Jackals had one other four-game win streak in June. They suffered through one five-game losing streak and three four-game losing streaks. Otherwise, up and down on a daily and weekly basis.

The one thing that's been consistent since Opening Day has been the hitting.

The Jackals have been the best-hitting team in the league all year, currently on top of the league stats with a .296 team batting average. They also lead the league in total hits and rank No. 3 in home runs.

Up and down the lineup, this team has been simply sensational at the plate, led by Dalton Combs (.364 with 66 RBI) and Josh Rehwaldt (.324, 24 HR, 64 RBI) and Todd Isaacs (.327, 22 stolen bases).

Rounding out the slugging batting order are Trevor Abrams (.323), Justin Wylie (.301), Alfredo Marte (.298), Santiago Chirino (.285) and Jason Agresti (.282). George Bell Jr. and Joe Simone have also chipped in with some timely hitting in more limited roles on the field.

Pitching, however, has been a different story as Carey has sent one hurler after another to the mound without much success, and New Jersey is currently 13th in the league with a team ERA of 6.04.

Bright spots have included Angelo Baez, who moved from the bullpen to the starting rotation and is now 5-4 with a 2.36 ERA and Jorge Tavarez who has a 5.08 ERA but a 6-3 record with a league-leading 107 strikeouts over a team-leading 85 innings of work. Reliever Hansel Rodriguez has been the standout of the year, making 25 appearances with a stellar 1.76 ERA.

GREYS IN TOWN NEXT

No team in any sport ever wants to look past any opponent, and that's what the Jackals must be careful to avoid when the Empire State Greys arrive at Yogi Berra Stadium to start a three-game series on Tuesday night.

A travelling team formed at the last minute by the league to round out an eight-team East Division this year, the Greys come to town with a lowly and last-place record of 5-67. The Jackals faced them once this year, sweeping three games in late June.

At that point in the season, the Greys still had not won a single game, but, right after the series with the Jackals, the Greys headed for Troy, NY, and topped the Tri-City ValleyCats. They would later beat New York and Ottawa before putting together back-to-back wins over Windy City July 29-30.

After that, the Greys were swept at New York and at Sussex County this past weekend before coming to Little Falls for this second match-up with New Jersey.

Following the series with the Greys, the Jackals will spend the upcoming weekend in a home-and-home series with the Miners, then play a series in New York, then come back to Yogi for yet another three-game series with the Greys.

Meanwhile, the Miners are playing a total of nine home games against the Greys during the month of August.

The Jackals and the Miners will end the regular season squaring off in Sussex County in the final weekend of the year, Sept. 2-4. And, if New Jersey can find a way to put together even a modest winning streak or two between now and then, that final Garden State Rivalry showdown could be a whole lot of fun with a playoff spot or two on the line.
